I looked up from my laptop only to see his head down on the settee. Sounds of snoring fills the air. I guess that walk in the park this morning made him sleepy.

Wow! I have been so crazy busy out of my mine! When will I catch-up? So far I love this Retro settee in this room. It sits close to a fireplace in the studio. Real cozy. Soon I'll paint the walls. Love the plumberry color above. I have one wall picked out for that color. The organic green I love too. It's slowly getting there. An eclectic mix of vintage. I'll post more photos soon.

.....It's a Girdle! The Playtex Corporation introduced this now famous variety of girdles in the 1960's. This new era girdle was made of Tweave fabric, a lightweight fabric made with Lycra. This 'I Can't Believe It's a Girdle' collection was super popular in the United States and Australia. I heard the Australians love them more. They did have quite a pretty design, comfortable and quite durable.

Actually, Playtex has been around since 1932. Founded by an inventor and industrialist. The original factory in New York produced ladies' swim caps and latex gloves. These days their operations are in Dover, Delaware.

Just got back from NC. What a trip! We traveled some country routes to NC. Wow, what beautiful mountains and views. Everything is blooming and smells so fresh. Had a super time visiting with my dad and my family. Here's some photos of a country antique store in Virginia. Tons of advertising signs and unique birdhouses that are made out of all kind of salvage collectibles. The man that owns the place makes these charming birdhouses with his father. A hobby that they have been enjoying for years. He called his hometown the mud hole of Virginia and said that we would pass quite a few mud holes on the way down to NC. I thought that was a funny way to describe your hometown. Quite a charming place, with a farm of exotic birds and varieties of pigeons. Each little barn was filled with antiques. Had a chance to go to Selma, NC to the historic district. Lots of antique shops. Came home with some goodies. We even had a chance to go to some garage sales in NC. Scored a pair of retro lamps. Can't wait to unpack and see what I purchased.

I'm obsessed with vintage green for this season. I totally love it so much that I think I'm going to paint at least one wall or two in the boutique a bold funky green. Last week I even bought a long necklace with funky green large gumball size beads. I'm not sure why I'm lovin' it so much. Maybe, it reminds me of the unforgettable times of being a child of the 60's and 70's. Mod, fresh and hip comes to mind when I see the different shades of green. Although, it also makes me think of Spring, a time of rejuvenation and the awaking of foliage. Yet, it could be that I like the soothing character of green teas. Whatever reason I just want to slather everything with green. What's your favorite color this season?

I love this simple recipe for Curried Chickpeas and Cashews. Very little salt is used. Very hardy vegetarian meal. A dollop of Greek yogurt on top. Since we're not vegetarians we ate this as a side dish, a smaller portion, along with broiled bluegill.

We're getting ready to go to a Super Bowl party tonight. If you live in the Pittsburgh area like me, you know this is like a national holiday. The stores close early or didn't even open at all. The malls closed early. Even my favorite flea market posted a note on the door that they're closing early. I never seen so much black and gold in my life this week. Even schools have a two hour delay tomorrow due to the Super Bowl game. Do you think Pittsburgh love there Steelers?

Hot Cinnamon Tea Roasted Pecans

Well, my diet is off today. With all the party food tonight, there's no way I can resist. I roasted pecans with a spicy sweet mix made of tea and made some magic cookie bars. Can't wait to see what other goodies are going to be there. I already got on the treadmill this morning. Tomorrow I'll do the same. Then off to the fitness center to spin. I think I already gained three pounds just testing out the goodies I made for tonight. "Here we go Steelers! Here we go!" So, no matter where you live you're going to hear the screams, yelling and shouting from the Pittsburgh fans to your neck of the woods. That's how loud it's going to get.

He would loved to get paid extra bones:) Yeah, really he is the bestest ( I know this is not a word but, I like using it anyway) he picks up things if I drop them, he lets me know if a customer arrives and he's a super foot warmer when I'm working online. He just has so many talents.

We're in the middle of a Winter storm. Six inches of snow by tomorrow. Soup just sounds so snuggle warm. For a heart healthy choice I made this Curried Corn Soup with Spicy Chile-Ginger Sauce. My first time making it. Only around 141 calories per serving. It had a little bit to it and quite filling. Love it! Even my husband loved it. Shhhhh, don't tell him I used coconut oil in the soup. He doesn't like coconut anything. What he doesn't know won't hurt him. Hah hah hah! We'll even have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

I just read this refreshing idea. It's to take time to drink your tea or coffee outside. Especially in the morning. The article said that traditional Chinese Medicine holds that morning energy is the purest; getting outside helps to reenergize in a meaningful way. This makes you in touch with each season and your surrounding environment. I love drinking my tea in the warmer months outside but, in the cold months I just look out the bay window in my living room. It's a beautiful view of the woods and creek. What a super habit to get into to motivate you for the rest of the day. Maybe, if it gets above freezing I will drink my tea outside tomorrow and Chaco can play ball for a couple of minutes.

Organizing My Tea and Things

If you're like me you never have enough room for all your things. This time of year is the best to get organized for your life this new year. Finding vintage and antique items are always a fun way to get started organizing. Being the tea lady that I am, it's hard to store all my varieties in one place but, recently I came up with a solution. I took my chippy antique Chinese chest from my other room and put it in the kitchen. It's now filled with all kinds of tea. The scene on the chest is from an old Chinese opera. Love this chest. Copper teapots make for a great hideaway storage or bank.

Here's another antique Chinese chest with two doors again, with opera scenes. We store extra magazines and whatnot's. Many years ago this chest stored the most beautiful silk opera costume. The beautiful Chinese wedding basket above the chest is made of elmwood. This too is a very old piece, the custom at a Shan Xi wedding was to have this basket to serve sweets to the wedding guests then later it would turn into a lunch bucket for the couple. Now a great conversation piece, antique and storage.

Of course baskets of all shapes and sizes make for great storage. The quirky are always fun. I just picked up a super large green chili pepper made of chalkware. It's 15 inches long and around 5 inches wide. It has a hook to hang from the ceiling. Just need to touch-up the paint. Guess what? It's a bank. Maybe, I can save my pennies for more vintage sprees. The green vintage receipt hook I just purchased on Etsy is for my shipping receipts. Wooden bowls are my weakness. So inexpensive. Not just for fruit but, practically any storage.

Sorry for not posting for a while, life has been really out of my control. Well, peeps trying to start the new year off right. Making more healthy and tasty meals. This is one of my favorite recipes in the photo above. I don't believe in New Year's resolutions but, I do believe you must make goals. My goal is to eat less processed foods and more real food. Also, I did lose a good amount of weight last year but, I have a goal weight in mind before Spring which, I'm almost there. Another, goal is to really turn around my business. I have new ideas and visions! I'm excited about that! What are your visions and goals for this year? I would love to hear them. Off, to take a tea break. Hmmmm should I have Irish Rum tea or Orange Passion tea?

Vintage Farmhouse Chic

The words 'farmhouse' and 'chic' seem to be completely opposite. Yet these opposites blend quite nicely. I have such an eclectic home but, for some reason Summer brings out more of the farmhouse decorator in me. I love the color and warmth of this enamelware bowl above. It reminds me of the times in the kitchen with grandma.

The farmhouse look blends, natural elements like feathers, flowers, sheds with the utensils and equipment used on the farm and kitchen. Of course, what would a farm be without animals. The element of farm animals makes the look come alive. On the other hand, the chic look blends, crystal, glass, scones, shimmery, elegance, chandeliers and modern lines. Wow! What a super vintage hunting Friday I had. We took a trek up to Laughlintown. On the way up we took Chaco swimming in the river. Needless to say, one happy pup! One happy gal, too! We found some more flea markets to hunt along the way. Finally, we got to our destination, the Laughlintown Antique Mall. The mom and daughter owners there, are the most sweetest people. I love that mall. After looking at the second vendor's booth, I look over at the other gentlemen that walked in. Boy, did he look familiar. I keep on looking over at him. I know, isn't that so rude. Well, anyway, I walked right up to him and said "Don't I know you from somewhere?" Can you believe I said something stupid like that? Like, I was hitting on someone at the club:) My husband was right there, looking at me, like what is wrong with you woman! I really didn't mean for it to come out that way. But, I never forget a face, even if I forget my name, what day it is, what I ate a moment ago and so on, I still remember a face. Anyway, he kindly answered " Yes, you know me probably from Bravo's Top Design Show". It was the well known Eddie Ross, top interior designer and editor. He was one of the super contestants on season two of Bravo's Top Design. At one time he was the senior style editor of Martha Stewart Living. Now, Eddie along with his partner Jaithan Kochar offer their interior design and styling services and event production. They have this wonderful blog and boutique online. I love, Eddie's style. Eddie and Jaithan were quite gracious and kind. They even agreed to take a photo with Harry and I (the crazy lady from PA) with my mobile phone. Thank you Eddie and Jaithan! How did we get to this madness? Well, let me tell you. I started feeding Mr. Squirrel this Winter. He would come to the window every morning and I would leave nuts outside. Mind you during the Winter we don't have the screen in the window. Pop open the window and out goes the nuts on the outside ledge. We became friends fast even though, Chaco didn't like my new friendship. Well, about three weeks ago I wanted to see how strong our friendship had become. I opened the window, thrust out my hand with an appetizing heap of unshelled nuts. My little friend was so excited he leaped onto the ledge went for one nut, out of many and to his surprise and mine, he got a pinky finger instead. A shrilling scream! Chaco to the resue. Barking away. Defending his mommy. Mr. Squirrel leaped away. It was a mistake. Just a little misunderstanding, as blood squirted from my finger, I began to think, doesn't Mr. Squirrel want to be my friend anymore. Then I looked up. Mr. Squirrel was back. The look on his face was as if he was saying "I'm sorry. Your brown finger looked like a nut. Do you still want to be friends?" Needless, to say it was a big misunderstanding. He still comes everyday. Warmer weather calls for a screen in the window. Now Mr. Squirrel is trying anything to come visit us in the kitchen. I think if he could sit at the breakfast table and eat with us he would.

Natural Beauty

I love the natural beauty of sheds. I decorate with sheds. Just prop on antique books, like the photo above. I even use them to hang jewelry in my Shoppe. You might wonder, what are deer sheds? Deer shed their antlers every year and then grow a new set. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for deer to shed their antlers. This all happens between the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. They literally drop off onto the ground. Then they start the cycle of growing new antlers again. Why? Of course the male deer want to grow back their antlers to attract the ladies during mating season.

Super Cold!

Second day of the new year and I'm freezing! It's super cold! In the teens today but, the weatherman said if feels like single digits. Great day to hangout at home. My hubby has been on vacation for two weeks at home. Needless to say he's been an eating machine. He's hungry every minute. All this baking and cooking has made me one tired girl. But, it's fun. Today I baked stromboli and tonight a butter pecan cake. I never bake alone. As, you can see from the photo, Chaco is always around, waiting for any morsel to drop. He hit the mother load tonight . Yes, a drop of butter rum icing almost hits the floor! But like a Pittsburgh Steeler, Chaco runs and makes a great interception! Yeah! Go Chaco! Go! I'm not suggesting dogs eat sweets or junk food. It's bad for them. Labs you have to watch. They try to eat anything. I always put all food more than a paws reach up from him. We love our Chaco! Well, I'm going for my last cup of tea for the evening. Until tomorrow!

Being on vacation is always refreshing. We stop at this village situated in the beautiful mountains of Southwest Virginia. The recreated village is based on the site of an actual archaeological excavation. It's a interesting look at the Eastern Woodland Indians. There's a museum too. The nature trails are beautiful. You're not allowed to take photos except only the ones I took here. Can you believe the temperature was in the 80's? Road trips are always fun. We're in NM now.

Gazpacho with Granny Smith Apple-Basil Granita

I'm always trying something different. I found this recipe in my latest Cowboys & Indians magazine. It calls for yellow tomatoes but, I used red tomatoes. You know trying to use what's left in the garden. It still came out terrific! The twist with this recipe, is what chef Mark Kiffin says "....people don't often think of together." He's talking about the Granny Smith apples with basil granita. The granita calls for Granny Smith apples, lemon, ginger, sugar and basil leaves. The frozen treat is delicious! (I can just eat this alone in a dessert bowl.) The granita nicely compliments the bite of the jalapeno in the gazpacho, with it's sweet apple ginger and basil goodness. Cilantro is one of my favorite herbs. So, with the cilantro, red onion, yellow pepper in a red wine vinegar mix, place on top of the gazpacho and the granita on top, makes for an absolutely wonderful delicious taste! I love the Art Nouveau era! Art Nouveau is the French term for "new art". This era lasted about 40 years. Starting around 1890. It's characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, insects, as well as highly-stylized, flowing and sensuous lines. The Art Nouveau approach to design would work on everything from furniture to everyday life. Above is one example of Art Nouveau brass picture frame. This is a later piece that was slowly evolving into the Art Deco style.

Love bird pins? Here's a fabulous vintage roadrunner bird pin, signed: Ultra. Did you know that the official state bird of New Mexico in the USA is the roadrunner? They're quite funny to watch. They prefer running to flying and has been clocked at speeds of 15 miles per hour. They're part of the cuckoo bird family. Of course, all of us cartoon fans, just remember Wile E. Coyote trying to out run the Roadrunner. Poor Coyote, he never gets a break.

Collectible Flour Sack Puppets or Dolls

Around 1929 the price of cotton drop. Allowing more companies to use more cotton sacking as packaging. Eventually they saw a great opportunity for promoting the use of feed sacks. First feed sacks began to be sold in colors then, more colorful prints for making dresses, aprons, shirts and children’s clothing began to appear in stores. By the late 1930s there were more attractive and desirable prints. Artists were hired to design these prints. This turned out to be a great marketing tool, as women picked out flour, sugar, beans, rice, cornmeal and even the feed and fertilizer for the family farm based on which fabrics they desired. Some sacks displayed lovely border prints for pillowcases. Scenic prints were also popular. Manufacturers even made printed patterns for dolls, stuffed animals, applique and quilt blocks. Above is an example of a uncut 1939 puppet or doll flour sack from the Victor Flour company of Nebraska.

Last week I finally had time to visit the new Farmer's Market in Export, PA. What a nice market to get fresh veggies, fruits and more. Right in the middle of town, along the creek. Varieties of meats, sausages, dips , yogurts, delicous baked goods and even homemade doggie treats. I always love supporting local community. It's every Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. What I like is that your're welcome to walk your dog on a leash through the market. I might set up a booth next week at the market.

What is Steampunk fashion? Well, Steampunk itself could mean different things to different people. Steampunk is a sense of adventure. It celebrates the Victorian era with a modern twist. It's the mad scientist looking to create. It's a cyber mix with an Edwardian era twist. A little Jules Vernes. Steam engines and modern engines. Fantasy! Old castles with modern technology. Exotic, Gothic, and adventurous! All this translates in the Steampunk fashion. In the last couple of years we've seen this movement in a lot of motion pictures and music. Did we ever have fun on Tuesday night. My girlfriends from Poland speak very little English but, the language of friendship, laughter and love surpasses any language barrier. I think we tried on and modeled every hat in my boutique. Of, course we took dozens of photos. We ate dessert and drank tea to around 1:00 in the morning. Yes, this is pass my bedtime. But, for them, they're on Poland time. So needless to say, they were wide awake. It doesn't matter what time it is, it's always fun staying up with your girlfriends!

Round trip motorcoach transportation is $24.00 per person. Departing from Four Points Sheraton Hotel parking lot in Greensburg, PA at 6:00 a.m. Spend all day at Rogers, Ohio shopping. Vintage miniature sample hat and box collectibles are unique. These photos show a mans Champ hat and box. This vintage haberdashery hat and box were so called gift certificates. For instance, a wife would go to the local haberdashery and buy a hat for her husband. She would get this mini hat and box as an gift certificate. Her husband would later go to the store get measured for his hat. As you can see from the photos the hat box is a model of a normal size box. What a dapper collectible!

The Little Antique Rocking Chair that Almost Got Away

This sweet child's antique rocking chair I had for quite some time. Last summer I thought I would sell it at our gigantic two day antique sale. Believe me I won't forget that weekend. It was a blustering 90 degree weekend, with 90% humidity. We sold almost every antique furniture piece we had. Needless to say, to make room for more stuff. This sweet rocker almost had a buyer, but they passed. Can you believe that? Well, maybe it was meant to be. A couple of weeks ago when I was cleaning the guest bedroom, to make it kid cozy for our granddaughter, I remember the antique rocking chair. I thought what a nice addition to the room. Of course, she would prefer the room to have all pinks, purples, and Dora the Explorer decor. I have to say it is a adult looking room. So, to have a balance medium, I put some of her favorite colors and things, along with the antique rocking chair. Does a three year old really care about decor? Well, let me tell you this, they do! When her eyes first met the antique rocking chair, she put her little hands up on her cheeks and said " OMG I love it!" She grabbed the pink pillow and began to rock. Now, one of her favorite things to do when she comes over, is to rock in her antique rocking chair, notice she claimed it, and hold her baby doll. This little antique rocker almost got away. I'm so happy it didn't. And, the sweetest little girl claimed it!

Vintage Tortoisehell Mantilla Comb

This gorgeous 1920's or early 1930's Spanish influenced large hair comb or mantilla comb adorn a lady at one time, probably at a evening ball or a night out. Intricate beauty! A mantilla is a lace or silk scarf worn over the head or shoulders of a woman. The scarf would be worn over this high comb. This became very popular in the 17th and 18th century by women in Spain and Latin America. I mostly remember seeing these beauties on the lady flamenco dancers. The actual tortoiseshell comb became an object of beauty in the XIX century. Then in the 1920's the Spanish influence hit the US in fashion. Back came the large tortoiseshell mantilla combs without the scarf.

Morel Mushrooms

My husband quite the adventurer and hunter he is, found the mother load of morel mushrooms. Oh, it's that time of year for morel hunting in PA. I never hunted for morels before. I heard all this talk about them, how hard it is to find them and how wonderfully delicious they taste. Tonight, I thought I would be the judge of that. So, I called up my professional chef friend 1,900 miles away. He gave me some great tips. I'm not a chef but, I thought I was tonight! So, I cooked up chicken breast in a pan. In another pan I sauteed white wine, parsley, green onions, garlic and morels. I patiently looked at my husbands face for the final verdict. Yes! It was fantastic! He loved it! We wanted more but, to late it was all gone. We ate it up so fast. Needless to say, I might become a morel hunter too.

My Bleeding Heart

The garden at the tea boutique, showcase two of these beauties. Bleeding heart perennials bloom in May and June. They love laying in a shady woodsy spot. I heard that they can reach up to four feet tall. Last year I planted these pink bleeding hearts. We'll see how big the get!

What is Precious Metal Clay or PMC?
PMC is a putty like material that contains fine silver particles and a binder. This material can be formed to create silver jewelry. After the PMC is formed and dried, it is fired in a kiln to burn out the binder and fuse the silver particles. The jewelry is then tumbled, polished and finished. The result is an original pure silver (99.9% silver) creation.

Is it Easy Being Green?

In honor of Earth Day today, I like to share with you things I've been doing to be more earth friendly. I'm not fanatical but, I do my best. Refer to my blog post 'Entertain in Green' for fun going green party tips.

Since I'm tea crazy, I've been reusing tea leaves in potting soil mix, followed by an occasional watering with a tea infusion.
Every year I plant trees. Especially fruit trees.
We plant a small veggie and fruit garden for the summer.I'm not much for canning but, if all possible I freeze what I can of garden goodies.
I try not to use to many paper towels. Instead, cloth towels that can be washed.
I'm really into bamboo products. It's grass, not a tree. Very environmentally friendly! My cutting boards are bamboo. Now it's easy to find bamboo plates, utensils and cups at your local store.
In this past year I really cut down on driving. I combine errands in one trip.
All my bills I have sent via email rather then paper bill in the mail.
Papers I printed on once and don't need again, I use the other side as note paper.
Among my circle of friends, we gather clothes or household items and see who needs what. That's always fun! Especially clothes or shoes we exchange. If none of us need it we donate the items to charities.
Turn of lights and unplug appliances when not in use. I'm still working on doing this better.
I have my own cloth shopping bag. If I happen to forget, I ask the check-out clerk for paper. If they don't offer paper, I just scoop the items in my arms.

That's just a few.

There's more ways I'm trying to be more earth friendly.

I can't wait! Why by air fresheners or candles, when you have live natural air fresheners surrounding you. I have quite a few lilac bushes. Fresh from the garden into my vase, snips of lilac flowers. The awesome fragrance fills the room. Do any of you have a Big Lots store in your area? Now is the time to track down to Big Lots to get your fruit trees. Through the years I have bought quite a few trees there for such a reasonable price. Three years ago I bought two dwarf peach trees. They're the best fruit producing trees I ever had. The peaches are so delicious! I never sprayed pesticides on the trees. I guess you can say almost totally organic because, I'm not sure what they did before I bought the trees. I just read in a magazine that the top twelve foods with the highest pesticide residue are: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, grapes, pears, spinach and potatoes. Going all organic can be a little expensive. But, if you have your own garden or plant your own trees you can save a lot of money.

1887 Happy Days

Happy Days is a book I found at the local flea market. The spine was in bad shape, some pages fragile and missing. This 1887 book, I found to be quite full of engravings, poems and stories. To me a treasure! The engravings have so many uses. Sometimes I copy them and use to make cards or gift tags. I frame some. Decoupaging some pages of the book can be fun. Just reading some of the poems and short stories are quite interesting. Above is one sweet engraving and one Spring poem.

Each year there's a different theme to my garden. Here's one photo from my frogs gone crazy theme. This week I'm gathering ideas for this year.

Blue Willow

My post last Thursday mention about my love affair with blue and white patterns. It got me thinking. Why do I love that color combination so much? I think it goes back to when I was a child. My visits to grandma's house. Her cupboards were filled with all kinds of what we call now, vintage and antique goodies. I remember how I admired her blue willow pieces. At the time I didn't know the name of that particular pattern. As I became more familiar with antiques, I learned about the story behind the willow pattern. The Chinese story of Koong-see and her lover, Chang. Koong-see's father forbids her to marry Chang, so the lovers flee just as the leaves fall from the willow. Chinese soldiers pursue them and kill Chang, so Koong-see, heartbroken, sets fire to herself. The lovers are than transformed into doves, emblems of their constancy. That's the Chinese legend. But, the actual blue willow pattern has been around for centuries. The English potter Thomas Minton brings this pattern to light in the late 1700's. This pattern is still produced today. Minton probably never would of thought his pattern would still hold such popularity into our day.

How to Build Your Own Raised Bed

Are you in the gardening mood yet? Make that a 'Yes' for me. But, the weather in Western Pennsylvania isn't cooperating. I still went to the local gardening center yesterday to get inspired. Of course, the yellow and purple violas where calling to me, 'take me home'. Their cheeful smiles and beauty made it hard to pass up. My Office Makeover Decorating Challenge

Office makeover! I'm not done yet. But, I'm slowly making changes. Do you think I like blue and white? Come on laugh with me. I'm going to mix the old with the new. I already have a small chandelier up. My walls will need a fresh coat of paint. As you can see I have some antiques already in place. My floor! Oh my! I'm not sure yet. They're solid wood. I have a rug in mine. I love chocolate, blue, gold and reds hues. This is a tiny office space. Maybe a mirror. I'll ask my assistant Chaco. Doesn't he look dapper? Any questions asked of course must be rewarded with a yummy doggie treat. When I'm done I'll show you the complete makeover.

English Royal Commemoratives

English ceramics have been made for thousands of years. For us Americans, Staffordshire antique pieces have always been very collectible for their interesting decoration. One aspect of collecting English ceramics, is English Royal Commemorative pieces. They're quite interesting because they reflect a period in history. For instance, this black transfer portrait of Queen Victoria commemorating her Golden Jubilee year in 1887. Queen Victoria nearly reigned for 64 years. The longest in British history. There were many types of souvenirs made for Queen Victoria's 1887 Golden Jubilee besides this mug. Of course, we know her as the Queen who gave us the Victorian Era.
